Bookseller & Barista
Bookselling is a busy, active job that requires attention to detail, engagement with the public, grace under pressure, patience, and a positive attitude. Our booksellers’ primary goal is exceptional customer service, while contributing to a supportive and friendly work environment. You’ll interact with customers, help them find books, and maintain a pleasant browsing atmosphere and workplace. Additionally, as a barista, your role will include crafting amazing coffee, serving and preparing food, and pouring and selling beer and wine drinks. Flexibility and adaptability will be your strong suits as you help us create a unique and inviting experience in this dual role.
Responsibilities of Bookseller:
- Customer service:
- Welcome customers as they enter the bookstore and ask them how they can be assisted.
- Provide information on book availability using our inventory management software and other web-based databases.
- Assist customers in locating books in the store, or place special orders if necessary.
- Give suggestions of books according to customers’ interests.
- Answer the phone, and address customer inquiries and questions, or direct them to the appropriate person.
- Maintain knowledge of upcoming events and share with customers when appropriate.
- Sales and Order Processing:
- Process transactions through Bookmanager, our point of sale system.
- Clearly communicate the store's policies (returns, holds, shipping) to customers.
- Pick and ring web orders for in-store pickup and shipping.
- Contact customers when their order is ready for pick up, and maintain customer hold shelf.
- Operations Contributions
- Maintain a clean, tidy, orderly physical space: straighten shelves and displays, clean up after any self- staff- or customer-created clutter. Consolidate or remove trash and recycling.
- Pull and sort returns to publishers.
- Shelve incoming, misplaced, and backstock books according to class codes in Bookmanager.
- Assist in the setting up, hosting, and breaking down of in-store or off-site events
- Assorted data entry and other tasks as they come up.
- Creative Contributions
- Generate ideas for book displays, or subsections of shelves.
- Regularly provide staff picks for display in-store and online.
Qualifications for Barista:
- Prepare exceptional coffee and espresso beverages with precision, creativity, and a dedication to excellence.
- Offer warm and informed customer service, assisting with recommendations, and maintaining a welcoming atmosphere.
- Take initiative in maintaining a clean, organized, and adaptable workspace to accommodate our ever-changing needs.
- Prepare syrups, concentrates, and other house-made items using our original recipes.
- Operate the cash register accurately, process transactions, and interact with customers with a friendly demeanor.
- Extend your duties to include serving and preparing food items.
- Stay updated on our coffee, food, and beverage menus, assisting customers in making selections.
- Assist with stocking, inventory management, and creative merchandising.
- Embrace change and flexibility as we evolve from a coffee-only cafe into a Bookstore Beer, Wine, and Coffee Bar.
- Assist the cafe manager/designee in executing marketing and customer attraction goals.
- Comply with all food and alcohol serving regulations to ensure a safe, hygienic, and inviting environment.
- Must participate in mandatory training.
- May be required to lift up to 35 pounds.
Qualifications for Bookseller:
- An interest in books and a non-judgmental attitude about what people like to read.
- Positive attitude and ability to maintain a friendly disposition in a busy retail environment.
- Ability to learn and navigate new software and sleuth books on search engines.
- A commitment to supporting your coworkers and contributing to a positive workplace.
- Well-organized, able to multitask, but also attentive to detail.
- Strong communication skills.
- Previous bookselling experience is required.
- Ability to work nights and weekends.
This position pays $20/hour.
