A unique, upscale bookshop, bistro and bar in Grosse Pointe is looking for passionate booksellers to sell books and merchandise, maintain our store environment and provide an exceptional customer service experience for our guests. Our bookshop features adult fiction and non-fiction, a selection of young adult (14+) titles, retail wine and giftable merchandise.
Applicants should be enthusiastic about books and reading, comfortable engaging with customers and able to recommend titles based on knowledge of our inventory. Applicants must be computer-savvy, motivated to work independently as well as part of our team, including jumping in and assisting other departments as needed during busy times (i.e. bussing tables). Please note - this job requires going up and down stairs multiple times per day. This is a daytime position, with start times beginning anywhere from 8am to 11am, depending on the day. Shifts will end by 4-5:30 pm (sometimes 6pm on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. Open to a flexible schedule for the right person. Pay commensurate with experience.
Job Responsibilities
● Greet and interact with customers and make purchase recommendations.
● Effectively learn the bookshop point-of-sale system for sales transactions, inventory checks, special orders and webstore sales.
● Gift wrap items upon request.
● Maintain up-to-date industry knowledge, including current titles, trends and news
● Receive and shelve inventory accurately, process damages and pull special orders
● Answer and field phone calls and retrieve voicemails
● Maintain store appearance, including tidying shelves and other routine housekeeping (sanitizing tables, bathroom checks, straightening chairs, etc.).
● Write “staff picks” book reviews
● Assist bistro staff with overflow needs during busy times, including taking orders and making espresso drinks (training provided)
● Familiarity of all food and beverage offerings
Requirements
● Previous bookseller, retail or customer service experience preferred
● Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
● Basic math and computer skills (keyboarding, MS Office) and the ability to learn and navigate the book-centric point-of-sale and inventory system
● Able to endure prolonged standing and repetitive bending and lifting. Must be able to lift up to 30 pounds without assistance
● One Saturday per month required
● Booksellers must wear a uniform shirt
