Description

House of Books is hiring an Assistant Manager to help run bookstore operations, in a town with a literary, arts-oriented, and engaged population.

The House of Books Assistant Manager will be the primary point of contact for customers and the community on the sales floor, day-to-day, and will work with the General Manager on a range of tasks including: curation of inventory both adult and kids, ensuring smooth flow of operations between front of house and back of house, establishing and maintaining excellent customer service, and overseeing the flow of daily staff tasks like shelving and opening / closing procedures. Whoever takes on this role will also have the opportunity to interface with publishers about new releases, author events, and marketing plans. In short, we are looking for somebody who can both maintain our current brand and also expand it.

Strong candidates will have:

  • A detail oriented approach to bookstore aesthetics and workflow
  • A solid customer service background, whether in bookstores or other retail / service jobs
  • A passion to engage with customers, recommending books, and helping to grow the bookstore inventory to have something for everyone
  • A growth-minded approach to bookstore sales
  • An ability to communicate sales trends to the staff in concert with the General Manager
  • An understanding that a job like this is an active one, not a passive one
  • An eye for sharp curation, while also taking into account the needs and desires of the community
  • An ability to travel light distances for offsite events, selling books there and representing the House of Books brand

(A particular aptitude for kids books and family programming would be an added bonus.)

This is NOT a remote position.
